Our underwriters focus on answering two fundamental questions.  Should we write a policy for a particular customer?  What is a fair price for the risk that we would incur by writing the policy?  On the surface, these questions may seem straightforward, but as an underwriter, you will need to possess a curiosity that propels you to dig a little deeper for the answers. You will have to rely on your strong analytic, communication, and negotiation skills and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.  Underwriters are natural problem solvers who want to know our customers and how we can profitably accept the risks that our policies cover.

As an Underwriting Assistant you will participate as a team member supporting a designated group of stakeholders such as Sales teams or Independent agents.

Responsibilities:
  • Ensure that policy transactions are issued and changes are recorded accurately and in a timely manner by rating and entering transactions for Commercial Lines.  Such transactions may be quotes, new business, endorsements, cancellations or renewals.
  • Screen transactions to determine proper processing.  Refer to underwriters those transactions that require their attention; complete transactions directly if within delegated authority limits.
  • Provide timely and professional customer service to agents to facilitate the processing of business.  Communicate as needed with agents to obtain information needed to complete screening and transactions, etc.  Contribute to effective marketing of the Company products by answering questions, resolve problems on topics such as policy status, billing, etc, and explaining new or revised products and processes.
  • Order and screen miscellaneous reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, such as Motor Vehicle Reports, loss history reports, credit checks, outside inspections, loss control, etc.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma, or equivalent
  • Technical competence in underwriting/rating systems.
  • Rating and transaction entry expertise in multiple Commercial Lines - Farm/Ranch/Agri-business a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of underwriting guidelines for the transactions within authority limit (renewals, endorsements, cancellations, etc.).
  • Must have mathematical skills and the ability to interpret and execute underwriting instructions accurately; be detail oriented with good follow-through skills.
  • Working knowledge of PCs and software applications. Proficient keyboard skills.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written, are essential.

Benefits:

We recognize that talented people are attracted to companies that provide competitive pay, comprehensive benefits packages and outstanding advancement opportunities. For this reason we offer a Comprehensive Benefits Plan that includes the following:

Overview:

We believe strongly that commercial success can be achieved in a manner consistent with principles and ideals that bind us together as one company, that set us apart from our competitors, and that in the end will allow us to say we have succeeded commercially by doing the right thing the right way.

We believe that the Company's success is inextricably linked to our employees' satisfaction and success: satisfaction that they work for an industry leader committed to improving safety, satisfaction that they work for a company that does the right thing, and satisfaction that the company will reward them for their contributions and provide opportunities for personal growth and success.
